Day 23

Time for our hike up to the rim of the Kawah Ijen crater and the famous Blue Fire. The blue fire is ignited sulphuric gas, which emerges from cracks at temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius, sadly my iPhone wasn't able to take a photo of it. Normally people can actually go down into the crater but this is forbidden since a couple of tourists and miners died while down in the crater.

Time for the 3 kilometre climb to the Kawah Ijen Crater which consists of steep parts with slopes up to 45 degrees. It took us about 40 minutes to get up. Sadly for most of the time it was simply too dark to take proper photos.

And of course we saw the beautiful sunrise and the foggy acid lake within the crater itself. Miners collect around 75 kg of sulphur a day and carry it down to mountain.
